The number of novel coronavirus cases have been rising in East Turkistan. We fear China has not allocated adequate resources or undertaken serious efforts to assess the severity of the outbreak, diagnose, treat and prevent a large-scale virus epidemic in the region. Given the highly securitized nature of the region and the extremely deplorable conditions of China’s massive network of concentration camps, forced labor factories and other detainment facilities currently detaining millions of Uyghurs and other indigenous people, there is a serious and very high risk of mass outbreaks and deaths.
We call on the World Health Organization (WHO) and other international health organizations to send delegations to the Uyghur region where potentially millions are at risk of infection and death due to the nature of the mass internment camps and the lack of resources and infrastructure to diagnose, treat and prevent a serious virus outbreak.
We want the World Health Organisation to send a delegation to the region to evaluate the spread of the virus, assess the risks in the camps and take all measures necessary to prevent mass outbreaks and deaths.
We want WHO, the UN, international human rights groups, national governments and the rest of the international community to pressure China to close the camps and release the millions detained immediately as part of the global response to the coronavirus outbreak.
We want global health and humanitarian organizations to send medical supplies and teams to screen, diagnose and treat affected individuals in the Uyghur region.
An epidemic and crowded mass detention camps are a potentially deadly combination.
